It was really awesome. I don’t remember if I has any issues with it as far as singal is concerned. Travelled to Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Granada, Marbella, Cadiz and Seville. Signal strength was excellent. Skype and whatsup helped me keep in touch with my team back in the home country.

GUATEMALA – A TRIP TO THE HEART OF THE MAYAN WORLD

Are you preparing an exciting journey across Guatemala? Take note of some of the main attractions offered to the traveller: We start with our favourite, Lake Atitlan, which has been defined as the most beautiful lake in the world. The Maya culture of Tikal Archaeological Park and many other Maya settings like Peten, Yaxha or Caibal; a trip to the past in the beautiful and ancient country capital known as the Antigua Guatemala and Volcán de Agua; The White Beach in Izabal, a paradise for tourists known as “Green Caribbean”, perfect if you look for a special destination in Guatemala; rivers of lava exhibited by the spectacular Pacaya Volcano; villages located in the high plateau of Guatemala where the native culture can be experienced; or Semuc Champey National Monument and Lanquin Caves… Guatemala offers the traveller a captivating historical, cultural and natural heritage. We suggest you have a look at the Tourism web of Guatemala to find your perfect travel plan.

QUAUHTLEMALLAN “PLACE OF MANY TREES”

Do you know the origin of the name Guatemala? How many languages are spoken in the country? What about the capital city? We provide you some general data in order to know the basics of this country before travelling. Guatemala has a wonderful meaning in Náhuatl, which is the Azteca origin language spoken by over 1.5 million citizens in Central America. “The place of many trees” is the translation of Quauhtlemallan. In Guatemala, the official language is Spanish; however over 23 Maya languages are spoken as well as xinca and Garifuna language in Izabal region. The total surface is 108.000 km2 and has over 15 million citizens; and the capital is Guatemala, being also the most populated city. The vast majority of the country is full of mountain, like Cuchumatanes Mountain Range and the Cliffs of Mother, and a beautiful south region in the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. Guatemala is a Central American country with most diversity of species. The climate is highly varied due to the orographic diversity. In general, the climate is mild in central plateau, tropical in coastal regions and mountain regions. Regarding politics, Guatemala is a presidential Republic and the economy is mainly based in agriculture, being one of the main cardamom exporting countries and one of the most important sugar and coffee producers. Tourism is the second most important sector with approximately 2 million tourists annually.

WHAT IS THE CURRENCY IN GUATEMALA? QUETZAL

On your next trip to Guatemala you should change currency to Quetzal (GTQ) that in 1925 substituted the Guatemalan peso. It is divided into 100 cents and there are notes of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 and coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 quetzals, 50 and 1 cent. 1 euro is equivalent to 8,63 quetzals and 1 American dollar is equivalent to 7,63. It is quite difficult to exchange currency outside Guatemala, therefore we recommend you change your money upon your arrival to the country, at banks, cash points or exchange offices; and don’t forget to change local currency upon your return. Banks open from 09.00 am to 17.00 pm and normally open Saturdays from 09.00 am to 13.00 pm.

DO I NEED A VISA TO TRAVEL TO GUATEMALA?

You will not need to process a visa if you belong to the EU, USA, Australia or Canada and if you stay in Guatemala as a tourist for a period not exceeding 90 days. Take into account that your passport needs to be valid for a period of 6 months.

TIPS FOR TOURISTS IN GUATEMALA – SECURITY AND HEALTH

Unfortunately we can’t say that Guatemala is a safe country. Currently, one of the most common crimes experienced by tourists is carjacking, so we don’t recommend you travel with a rental car across isolated roads. Pickpockets in tourist areas, stations and vehicles are another threat. Be careful if you travel during political conflicts and travel in groups with official guides. You should get a travel and health insurance because treatments are highly expensive. We advise you don’t forget vaccines against typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B and tetanus. Try to drink only bottled water and make sure milk is pasteurized. Be careful with rabies in forest regions as well as with bites. In addition, be cautions with the sun. Guatemala is close to the Equator and rays of sunlight are probably more powerful than what you are expecting.
