THE TEMPLE MOUNT

If you have a look at some of the main travel blogs and tourism webs, you will realize that the main attractions found in Israel are located in its capital, Jerusalem. The Western Wall, in the Temple Mount, is the most important Jewish religious centres which can’t be missed by any traveller. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Stations of the Cross, the palaces and Masada fortification, the Mount of Olives, Judean Desert, the Tower of David or the Church of the Nativity should be included in your trip. Tel Aviv is the second biggest city in Israel with a Mediterranean port and famous marina, or Nazareth, with attractions like the Basilica of the Annunciation and other important tourist attractions.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ISRAEL?

The State of Israel in Near East borders the Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine (the West Bank), Palestine (Gaza Strip), and Egypt. Israel is bathed by the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, and has a total surface of 22.145 km2, 273 km of coastline, and a population of 8 million citizens. Regarding the political situation, Israel is governed by a parliamentary democracy and is divided into six districts: Central, Haifa, Jerusalem, North, South and Tel Aviv. It has 40 types of different climates with the influence of Asian and African desserts and Mediterranean humidity. Israel is the most developed country in South-eastern Asia. The official currency is the New Shekel, although you can also pay with euros or dollars. Another interesting fact: Israel is the second country in the world with highest number of start-ups. The official languages are Hebrew and Arab; however the majority of people also speak English.

BE CAREFUL – RESPECT SHABBAT, WEAR DESCRETE CLOTHES AND AVOID RISKY AREAS

Try to be cautious around the neighbourhoods of ultraorthodox Jewish of Jerusalem, and respect the saint Jewish Shabbat day, from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening, 25 hours of calm and peace. There are several risky areas for the traveller. Avoid passing the Israel-Gaza frontier, the frontier with Syria and Lebanon or the frontier with Egypt. Although the country is safe for tourists, you should be careful with your personal belongings in tourist and crowd areas mainly in the city of Tel Aviv where thefts are common. Many travellers agree on the fact that is better to dress with discrete clothes, mainly to visit sacred places.

INTERESTING FOR THE TRAVELER: HEALTH, ELECTRICITY AND DOCUMENTATION

In Israel you will find good health services and no additional warnings should be taken, only carry insect repellent and drink bottled water. Electricity is 230 volts AC, 50Hz and sockets with three plugs; buy adapters and transformers. Regarding documentation, you will need a 6 month valid passport and get the tourist visa upon your arrival at the port or airport free of charge.

JEWISH, MUSLIM AND CHRISTIAN OPENING HOURS

The usual opening hours of shops and shopping centres ranges from 8.00 am to 19.00 pm, however depending on the type of shop and day of the week the opening hours can be modified. For example, Jewish shops close on Saturdays; Muslims rest on Friday and Christians on Sundays.
