Colonial cities like Granada or León are some of travellers’ favourite cities. Islands like Ometepe as a Biosphere Reserve, the paradise Corn Islands located in the Caribbean, and Solentiname Archipelago composed of 36 islands located in Lake Cocibolca are a delight for tourists looking for nature and impressive landscapes. Masaya Volcano National Park, Mombacho Volcano Nature Reserve or Cerro Negro Volcano can’t be missed on your visit. Don’t forget Matagalpa because is an ideal place to discover the country’s mountain region and enjoy rural tourism regarding coffee, tobacco and flowers.

WILL YOU VISIT MANAGUA? CAPITAL ATTRACTIONS

Managua is the largest city in Nicaragua and the most populated city in Latin America with over 2 million citizens. Managua is located next to Managua Lake, with interesting attractions like two cathedrals named Santiago Cathedral and Old Cathedral, as well as Rubén Darío National Theatre, and the National Palace. Visit the pink area which is full of bars, restaurants, shops and other entertaining services and don’t leave the city without sitting on El Malecón in order to observe the enormous Managua Lake. A relevant attraction is Acahualinca Footprint Museum where you will discover two footprints found in the city over 6.000 years ago as well as other pre-Columbian remains.

GET READY: DOCUMENTATION, CURRENCIES AND VACCINES

You won’t need to process a visa in order to travel to Nicaragua if you belong to the United States, Canada, European Union or the vast majority of Central and South American countries. You will only need a valid passport and a return flight ticket which has to be shown at the border. If you live in any South American country, you should vaccinate against yellow flu; it is also recommended to be vaccinated against hepatitis A, B and the anti-tetanus injection. You should also be careful with diseases like cholera and malaria. Don’t forget to get a health insurance to cover all the expenses in case of hospitalization or operation because health care and health centres are very expensive in Nicaragua. The official currency is the Nicaraguan Córdoba C$, which is divided into 100 cents. Notes can be found in 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 y 500 C$, coins of 5, 10, 25 y 50 cents and 1, 5 and 10 Córdoba. Tip: Exchange money and travel with cash because, according to many travellers, there are very few cash points. Don’t forget that American dollars are accepted in the vast majority of places.

IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL TO NICARAGUA?

Many tourists consider Nicaragua a dangerous country; however the truth is that crime rate is lower than in other neighbouring country, expect from Costa Rica. It is advisable to avoid walking alone across isolated and empty streets and don’t walk across troubled neighbourhoods and outskirts in Managua.
