WHAT TO SEE IN SLOVAKIA?

Slovakia is a small country with endless charming sites for travellers. Its forests and castles are famous worldwide and cities like Bratislava, Kosice, Poprad, and Trencin offer many interesting attractions and monuments. Regarding its capital Bratislava, we recommend a visit to some of the most popular places: Bratislava Castle and Palace, UFO Viewpoint, San Miguel Door and the National Theatre, Hviezdoslavovo Walk, Hlavné Námestié Square, and don’t forget the strange statuettes like Cumil, a worker who looks over a culvert and has already become one of the most famous attractions of the city; the soldier of Napoleon’s army or the beautiful Ignaz, placed after Communism to bring happiness and a welcoming environment to the city.

THERMAL TOURISM IN SLOVAKIA

Slovakia has one of the best health resorts in the world due to the curative properties found in its thermal waters. Health resorts in Pieštany, Sliac, Bardejov, natural pools in Dunajská Streda, Velký Meder and Patince, and the lakes in Zemplínska šírava, Doma, and Liptovská are the most relevant attraction. The country has over 12.000 thermal springs and 22 health resorts across the whole territory, so you can enjoy from a healthy and relaxing experience in any of the Slovak regions.

DISCOVER THE COUNTRY: GENERAL DATA ABOUT SLOVAKIA

Slovakia is member of the European Union since 2004, is located in Central Europe and is bordered by Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic. In 1989, the country separated from the Czech Republic and Czechoslovakia disappeared. The country covers 49.000 km2 and has around 5,5 million inhabitants. Regarding politics, the country is a parliamentary republic, the territory is divided into eight ‘kraje’ or regions and the country is growing rapidly in recent years.

DATA FOR THE TRAVELLER: CURRENCY, OPENING HOURS, HEALTH AND TIPS

The official currency in Slovakia is the euro. You can exchange money at banks that open from Monday to Friday from 08.00 am to 06.00 pm, as well as at airports, train stations, hotels, and even restaurants, although rates have declined. Shops normally have continued opening hours until 08.00 pm. Restaurants are open until 11.00 pm. The opening hours in museums and monuments are from 10.00 am to 06.00 pm and close on Monday. You can easily communicate with people in English because the vast majority of population speak English. The official language is Slovak. Health conditions in the country are good, although we recommend you drink bottled water and be careful in rural areas. In order to pay tips, 5 to 10% is advisable.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO TRAVEL TO SLOVAKIA

Citizens belonging to the European Union, USA, Canada, Australia, UK and the vast majority of western countries don’t need a visa to enter into the country, if you are staying a period of time not exceeding 90 days as a tourist or travel. A valid passport or Identity Card is required if coming from a EU country.
